After a break from fishing for a couple of months, due to work commitments, it was now time to a bend in the rods! I thought the best place for a few good fish at this time of the year would be Thorpe Lea fishery in Egham, Surrey.
I have fished Thorpe Lea many times and have always left with a few fish under my belt. The lake itself is very well stocked with a range of fish to 30lb+ and with the lake having over 50 swims, you will always find somewhere to fish.
We arrived at Thorpe Lea at 7:00 am when the gates opened to give myself and two friends the best chance of bagging a good swim for the weekend. The lake was fairly busy and we chose swims 16,17,18 which I knew were swims that had a reputation for putting fish on the bank, with the swims chosen it was time to get the gear round to the swim and get the rods out!
Once everything was in the swim, I found my spots and spodded around 10 spods of hemp and VNX+ 14mm boilies over my rods and within 15 minutes I was into my first fish. Unfortunately, after a 10 minute battle I lost my first fish due to a poor hook hold, not a great start to the session but that's fishing!
I landed my first fish around an hour later off the same rod and I was buzzing, only a fish of about 12-13lb but it saves a blank and a fish is a fish, especially in winter! The lake went quiet and we got some well deserved sleep seeing as we had been awake since 3am. I was awoken by a violent take on my left hand rod and after scrapping with a hard fighting mirror I landed an 18lb beauty.
I spodded another 10 spods and got my rod back out and it was time to wait for the next fish . We had dinner whilst watching the water. Alright!
After a very busy first night, with 11 fish being landed, the lake went very quiet during the day and we didn't see much show anywhere on the lake. As soon as darkness came all the rods came into action all night long until around 6am the following morning.
The second night landed 15 fish to 23lb, which brought our total of fish to 27 fish. Over the weekend I had spoken to many other anglers who weren't having many fish if any at all! VNX + boilies spodded over hemp really made a big difference in the amount of fish I landed once again!
It was a great weekend fishing at Thorpe Lea once again, with many laughs had and many fish landed it was great to get back on the bank and get a bend in the rods
All fish were caught using Ronnie rigs with 12mm VNX+ pop ups
